Lyrical / Contemporary Dance
Lyrical and contemporary classes that combine technique with expressive movement, where dancers learn to connect emotion to music and tell stories through choreography. Students need prior ballet and jazz experience before enrolling. Classes typically meet once a week, are grouped by age and experience, and are held on sprung floors. The dress code is tight-fitting shorts or leggings in black or studio colors, half soles (Capezio pirouettes) and hair pulled back, with no T-shirts, baggy clothing, jewelry or watches. Dancers perform in the end-of-year recital.

Lyrical / Contemporary Dance
Lyrical and contemporary dance at Nielsen School of Dance is part of the combo classes for older students, paired with jazz and tap. Lyrical is a fluid, continuous style in which students listen to the music and tell a story through their movement; in contemporary, they dance to contemporary music while improving their lines and technique.
When: The 2026-27 registration form lists two lyrical/jazz and tap combos: 3rd to 5th grade on Tuesdays, 4:50 to 5:45 PM, and 6th to 9th grade (ages 11 to 14) on Tuesdays, 6:15 to 7:30 PM. The season began September 8, 2026.
