Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument

U.S. National Park Service unit preserving Pliocene-epoch fossil deposits (3.5-million-year-old horse, mastodon, sabertooth cat, ground sloth, peccary, and 200+ other species). The Thousand Springs Visitor Center in Hagerman (open seasonally May 21 - September 7, 9am-5pm daily; off-season Wed-Sat 9am-4pm) is the only place to see fossils at the monument. Free admission. Free NPS Junior Ranger Program for kids — pick up the free booklet at the visitor center, complete the activities (varies by age), and earn a Junior Ranger badge sworn in by a ranger. The Junior Paleontologist booklet is a national NPS program available here. Ranger talks at the visitor center during operating hours. 4,000-acre monument with fossil-rich bluffs along the Snake River and a designated 3-mile Snake River Overlook + Emigrant Trail loop trail. Idaho's state fossil (the Hagerman Horse) was discovered here.

Hagerman Fossil Beds Junior Ranger Program

Free self-paced NPS Junior Ranger badge program. Pick up the Junior Ranger booklet at the Thousand Springs Visitor Center, complete the activities (which include paleontology-themed games, drawings, and observation tasks), and a ranger swears participants in as Junior Rangers with a free badge. The Junior Paleontologist booklet is also available as a companion national NPS program. Self-guided and drop-in; complete during one visit or across multiple trips. No registration required.
